We've lost another great man today. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Gene McCoy from my good friend Javi. Gene was a wiz when it came to car building, and Javi became really good friends with him. He didn't understand why some young kid would want to hang out with him. We had him on the Hot Rod Blues podcast and it was a fantastic episode.
I was so honored Gene allowed me to shoot his '31 Ford Sedan. He didn't think it was magazine-worthy, but that car would've won an award at Triple Crown if it was there (IMO). He was so appreciative that I wanted to shoot it, and we were both blown away when this photo made the cover of Modern Rodding (it wasn't one of my normal "hero" shots; I was just getting one last picture before he put it away). I was hoping to shoot the '32 in the background one day, which is every bit as nice as his '31, but he was meticulous and still had many rivets to finish in the interior. But it really wasn't about the cars that made Gene special; he was just the most genuine, humble man. He was quiet and mild-mannered. He didn't think anything he did was special, but his talent was among the best I've ever seen. He will be missed. Please say a prayer for his family and friends. Godspeed, Gene, until we meet again! 🥹
