It’s difficult to feel like you’re drowning, like no one is listening to your cry for help. Life can be overwhelming, anxiety-provoking, or even disheartening at times. When you’re feeling this way and other avenues like talking to friends/family or reading self-help books don’t work, reaching out for professional help is ok. It’s always better to get help before falling apart completely. Taking initiative to find help when you’re faced with strong feelings or life events that are challenging, means you care enough about yourself to find a resource to help yourself get back on your feet and take on the next day. It takes a lot of courage and self-acceptance to reach out and agree to being vulnerable enough to disclose personal difficulty. This courage should be met with a compassionate and warm response to help you succeed at overcoming the obstacles in your life to be a better version of yourself.

Reach out to Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech for help. Doctoral students under the supervision of licensed psychologists offer in-person services. We provide a service to anyone experiencing a variety of mental health concerns. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.fit.edu/community-psychological-services/ and complete our Prospective Client Form, or call us at 321-309-3709.

What is self-talk? Self-talk is the running internal dialogue we have throughout our waking hours. It is the little voice inside our heads that has the power to influence the ways in which we feel and behave. Self-talk can be positive and negative. Positive self-talk can assist us in building our self-confidence and makes day-to-day living better. On the other hand, people may find themselves struggling with negative self-talk, which beats us down and creates difficulties with the ways we view ourselves. The way we talk to ourselves is essential because it has the ability to empower us or even to defeat us, all depending on whether we conversate with ourselves in a positive or negative way. When we start telling ourselves “I can’t do this,” we start believing it. Positive self-talk is a tool people can learn to increase self-confidence and deflect from negative emotions. By reframing our negative thoughts into positive ones, we have the ability to improve our mental well-being.

Why is positive self-talk important? Reframing our negative thoughts to alternative, more manageable positive thoughts has shown to improve life satisfaction, improve immune system functioning, and decrease levels of distress experienced.

What can you do acquire positive self-talk skills? For individuals who experience difficulties in regulating self-talk, there are resources available to acquire the necessary tools to improve day-to-day living. We invite you to contact Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech. CPS offers therapy services by our skilled student clinicians who are under the supervision of licensed psychologists.
