Many people know Malcolm X.

Far fewer know the Malcolm behind the headlines.

As a young student, Malcolm once shared that he wanted to become a lawyer. His teacher reportedly told him that becoming a lawyer was “no realistic goal for a Negro” and encouraged him toward something smaller.

Imagine that.

Imagine brilliance meeting limitation before it even had a chance to fully bloom.

But Malcolm X refused to let the world define his possibilities.

One of the most extraordinary and lesser-known parts of his story came later while incarcerated. Malcolm became so hungry for knowledge that he copied entire dictionaries by hand—page after page, word after word—to build his vocabulary and educate himself. He would read long after prison lights went out, using hallway light shining into his cell because learning had become bigger than circumstance.

Knowledge wasn’t a hobby.

Knowledge became freedom.

And then came the “X.”

Not decoration. Not style.

The X represented a name taken, an identity erased, and a question left standing:

Who were we before history renamed us?

Malcolm X was more than a speaker. More than a symbol. More than a quote.

He was a student. A father. A truth-teller. A protector. A builder.

And perhaps his greatest lesson:

Your beginning does not decide your ending.

Happy Malcolm X Day.

We remember. We honor. We continue the work.

Malcolm X Day | May 19th (BASE STORY) - https://mailchi.mp/baseoregon/may-19-malcolm-x-day-the-man-they-couldnt-silence. Many know Malcolm X. Fewer know the full story. As a young student, Malcolm dreamed of becoming a lawyer and was told that goal was "unrealistic." Later, while incarcerated, he copied entire dictionaries by hand and read by hallway light after lights-out—turning knowledge into liberation. Malcolm X wasn't just a voice. He was proof that your beginning does not decide your ending. Happy Malcolm X Day. We remember. We honor. We continue the work.
