This American sycamore is the WIDEST tree in the state of Pennsylvania, according to PABigTrees.com! It spreads about 200’ (60 meters) and is about 90’ (28 meters) tall. It is estimated to be about 260-290 years old, but nobody is really sure. Despite its impressive size, this tree doesn’t even rank in the top 20 largest sycamores (Platanus occidentalis) in PA! The tree appeared in good health, and it has several back-up plans. Some of the tree’s longest limbs touch the ground, where they have grown new roots and are now “layered” in. The tree essentially cloned itself about 70’ from the parent stem; a good insurance plan in case disaster strikes the main stem. It also has numerous basal sprouts around the trunk; suppressed for now, but eager to take off if the main stem declines. Barring any idiotic human interference, this tree should continue to live for a long, long time!If you decide to seek the tree’s location and visit, please be considerate and mindful. Looking for a reliable licensed driver for an entry level labor position.
