How to Perform CPR: A Step-by-Step Guide by Pulse CPR and First Aid School in Martinez, GA
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that can make a critical difference during a cardiac emergency. Whether you are a parent, teacher, healthcare worker, or simply a concerned citizen, knowing how to perform CPR is an essential skill. At Pulse CPR and First Aid School in Martinez, GA, we provide American Heart Association-certified training to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to save lives. Here, we’ll walk you through the steps of performing CPR effectively.
What is CPR and Why is it Important?
CPR combines chest compressions and rescue breaths to help maintain blood flow and oxygenation to vital organs when the heart stops beating. Performing CPR promptly can double or even triple a person’s chances of survival in cases of cardiac arrest.
Step-by-Step Guide to Performing CPR
1. Assess the Situation
Ensure the Scene is Safe: Before approaching the victim, make sure the area is free from hazards.
Check Responsiveness: Gently tap the victim and shout, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, move to the next step.
2. Call for Help
Dial 911: Immediately call 911 or instruct someone else to do so.
Get an AED (Automated External Defibrillator): If available, send someone to retrieve it.
3. Check for Breathing
Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds. If the person isn’t breathing or is only gasping, begin CPR.
4. Perform Chest Compressions
Hand Placement: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest (on the lower half of the breastbone), and place your other hand on top.
Compression Depth and Rate: Press down at least 2 inches deep at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
5. Deliver Rescue Breaths (if trained and able)
Open the Airway: Tilt the head back and lift the chin.
Pinch the Nose: Pinch the victim’s nose shut, take a normal breath, and seal your lips over their mouth.
Give Two Breaths: Each breath should last about 1 second and cause the chest to rise.
6. Use an AED as Soon as Possible
Turn on the AED and follow its verbal instructions.
Attach the pads to the victim’s bare chest as directed.
If the AED advises a shock, ensure no one is touching the victim and press the shock button.
Resume CPR immediately after delivering a shock.
7. Continue Until Help Arrives
Keep performing CPR cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until professional help takes over or the person shows signs of life.
Common Questions About CPR
What if I’m Not Trained in CPR?
If you haven’t been formally trained, focus on Hands-Only CPR, which involves continuous chest compressions at a steady rate.
Can I Hurt Someone by Performing CPR?
It’s better to perform CPR than to do nothing. While there is a slight risk of rib fractures, the priority is saving a life.
