Cavern Point Farm
The rain is currently hitting the windows, but at least we got to enjoy a couple hours of nice spring weather this morning! Take heart, friends, eventually it’ll be here to stay!

Well, glad we got that out of our system!

Since we’ve been sharing summer projects, here’s another one that kept us busy (and took out Jason’s back for a while). For ten years now, we’ve been trying to improve our livestock handling facilities a little at a time. It can be very expensive, and it also takes a while to figure out exactly how you want it set up. This year we re-oriented things so the layout more closely fits the design the industry refers to as a “bud box.” It definitely improved things, but we still have ideas for further improvement. The ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of stress on both the animals and the farmers as much as possible.
We’re no experts, and we can share a lot about what NOT to do, but if this is something you’re interested in learning more about, Jason will be giving a presentation called Livestock Logic at the 2026 GrassWorks Grazing Conference, Jan 22-24 in La Crosse. And if all you’re interested in is eating good beef, well, then maybe now you have a little more appreciation for all that goes into caring for those animals safely! Also, shout out to James and Colten for helping test out the new setup!

Back in fall when we were working feverishly on completing our pre-winter tasks before snow, we decided to make things harder by thinking of new tasks along the way - a common occurrence around here. One of those tasks was the milkhouse. It needed a new coat of paint. That led to the door. Why not build a new one from scratch? Then, the cool sign Timothy made in school - why not illuminate it? Since we’ve gone that far, we might as well clean out the inside of the milkhouse. Heck, let’s move the freezers into there! Lo and behold, the milkhouse has been completely repurposed as our farm store! And to think - it wasn’t even on our task list. 😏
So, next time you come to pick up beef, keep in mind that we’ve moved to a new location - about 105’ away. 😊
