That deal between clover and bacteria is stranger than it first sounds. The bacteria do not just sit there — they are actively pulling nitrogen gas straight out of the air, the same air that is 78% nitrogen but almost completely useless to most living things in that form. The bacteria convert it into something plants can actually absorb, and in exchange, the clover pumps sugar down into the roots to keep them fed. Neither one survives the arrangement alone. A single healthy patch of white clover can quietly deposit the equivalent of a commercial fertilizer application back into the soil — season after season, no machinery required. The surrounding grasses and plants pick it up too, roots drinking in what the clover left behind. Entire meadows have been quietly fed this way for thousands of years, long before anyone understood what was happening underground. What looks like a w**d spreading across a lawn is actually a living infrastructure system — small, patient, and wildly efficient. The most powerful things rarely announce themselves. [FY3FB]
