In late 2013, retail giant Target Corporation fell victim to a massive cyberattack that compromised the credit and debit card information of over 40 million customers during the crucial holiday shopping season. 💳

The breach’s origin was a chilling lesson in supply chain security: attackers gained initial access to Target’s network through a third-party HVAC vendor whose credentials had been stolen. Once inside, they deployed sophisticated malware (known as BlackPOS) onto Target’s Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, directly siphoning customer payment data.
