Clifden Castle in Connemara, for example. It’s neither a castle, nor is it particularly old, not in Irish terms anyway. It’s a manor house built in 1818 for John D'Arcy, the local landowner. He had it built in Gothic Revival style and had several of these standing stones erected around the house, presumably to emulate the many ancient standing stones dotted around the Irish countryside. When he died in 1839, John D'Arcy's eldest son Hyacinth inherited the house. However Hyacinth wasn’t as adept at running the estate, nor was he liked by the tenants. It wasn't long therefore until the D'Arcy estate went bankrupt and Clifden Castle became just one of several D'Arcy properties to fall by the wayside.
