Denim Day: Raising Awareness for Sexual Violence 04/30/2026

On Wednesday, it was Denim Day. Globally observed since 1999, Denim day is the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign. Denim day is observed on the last Wednesday of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

In Italy in 1996, the supreme court overturned a case where an 18-year-old girl was a r***d by her 45 year old driving instructor. In this case, the justices argued that she was wearing tight jeans. The justices said they were difficult to remove, therefore they argued that she removed them and gave consent. After the reversal, the Italian parliament wore jeans to work in order to show support for the victim. Peace Over Violence Executive Director Patti Giggans created Denim day in 1999 after this case happened and all the activism that followed.

Aside from denim being a convenient choice of clothing that is common, denim symbolizes this message of solidarity for victims and resistance against sexual violence. An exhibit in the Flexible Programming Space was put up by Violence Awareness and Response Program in collaboration with the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

The VARP office is located in the Women’s Center. Sexual violence can occur to anybody, and Crisafi emphasizes confidentiality and offers many different resources. From counseling to groceries to emergency housing, there are many ways VARP is able to help. Nobody is alone when facing struggles like this and help is always available.

Mavericks Prepare for the Final Regular Season Series 04/30/2026

The Maverick baseball team is geering up for their final regular season series this weekend against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. They are set for three meetings, two games on Friday and a contest on Saturday. The first game starts at 1:30 p.m here in Mankato at Bowyer Field. The second match of the day will soon follow the ending of the first, while the game on Saturday begins at noon.

The Mavericks have a strong record of 36-10 overall so far, while the Bulldogs have a record of 16-29. This is another conference meeting, which continues to prove important as the NSIC tournament looms. Within the conference, MSU is ranked first with a record of 28-5. On the contrary, UMD has a ranking of tenth and a record of 15-18. Both are coming in with win-streaks, so momentum is a key thing to keep going into this series.

In recent history, MSU has been dominant in their last meetings with UMD. The last ten meetings have held nine strong wins. Last year when they met, the Mavericks won two of the three contests. Duluth did draw the last blood, winning 13-6 against Mankato on March 23, 2025. Overall though, the Mavericks have won 80% of the games against the Bulldogs dating back to their first meeting in 1998.

With the final series to go in the regular season, it will be important for the Mavericks to stay disciplined and play like they have all season. The NSIC tournament is set to start next week Wednesday in Sioux Falls, where the Mavericks will look to two-peat the conference championship.
