Jean-Michel Basquiat 👑👑👑
"Slave Auction" 1982
Collage of crumpled paper, oil pastel, and acrylic paint on canvas 183 × 305,5 cm
In 1993, it became the first painting by the New York artist to enter the Centre Pompidou’s collection.
It signaled that his work had moved beyond the New York downtown scene and become part of the global art canon.
The Centre Pompidou is historically selective, collecting artists whose work is believed to have lasting cultural significance.
Basquiat was once dismissed by critics as a passing phenomenon, but inclusion in the Pompidou affirmed that his art belonged among the giants of twentieth century art.
It also represented a broader recognition of Black artists and voices in institutions that had long overlooked them.
