"Insight for a Secure Maritime World"

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On January 4th, 2024, Taiwan's Coast Guard rescued four injured crew members from the bulker Panoria, which caught fire off Kaohsiung. One crewman suffered serious burns, while three others sustained minor injuries.

The fire broke out in the engine room around 1700 hours near Pintung County. The crew extinguished it, but the captain requested evacuation for all 21 aboard. Due to 12-foot waves, ship-to-ship transfers were impossible, so a Ministry of National Defense helicopter evacuated the injured to a Kaohsiung hospital.

The remaining 17 crew members stayed on board. The tug Salvage Rigger was dispatched to tow the vessel, which was moving northwest off Taiwan’s coast by Sunday. All reporting credit goes to Maritime-Executive(see link)

This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On December 30th, 2024, the Philippine Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation after a domestic cargo ship, the Jerlyn Khatness, capsized in rough seas near Samar Island in the central Philippines. The 600 dwt vessel, built in 1993 and operating in the Philippines since 2016, was carrying cement from Cebu to Northern Samar when it encountered large waves and sank around 1430 hours.

Of the 15 crewmembers aboard, 13 were rescued, including one who swam ashore after 25 hours in the water. The body of a 30-year-old male was recovered, while a 64-year-old male remains missing. Passing vessels played a key role in the rescue efforts, with Civil Defense Philippines leading an aerial search for the missing individual.

The Coast Guard has located the sunken vessel and is urging passing ships to assist in the search while exercising caution. They have also called for enhanced safety measures in response to the region’s hazardous and changing weather conditions.
