July is Disability Pride Month, where we recognize the contributions and achievements of the more than 70 million Americans who have a disability. We also need to examine how we can make our built environments more accessible. When people with disabilities are included, respected, and supported, public spaces, such as transit, schools, housing, and healthcare, are made to work better for everyone.

Before the there was no legal guarantee of reasonable accomodations.
It took advocates and activists, along with a bipartisan group of legislators to get ADA across the finish line.
Is it perfect? No.
Is there more work to do? Yes!

It’s time to celebrate Disability Pride month! Disability Pride is a reminder to celebrate all the ways we are unique and to hold ourselves accountable for helping each other thrive and live well, no matter what.

We celebrate this every July to commemorate the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passing in July 1990 and to continue to make the vital steps toward building a society that honors the full spectrum of human experience.

Happy Disability pride month!! 

Let's be clear: our disabilities are not a weakness, they're our superpower. Damn proud to belong to this community and fight for a world where accessibility is the default—not an afterthought.

Yesterday, it was a pleasure meeting with advocates from The Arc-Dane County to discuss the important work they do to promote inclusion, educate our communities, and provide training on disability rights and issues.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their community. That’s why it’s critical that we continue investing in accessible and affordable assistive technology that helps people with disabilities access education, employment, healthcare, transportation, and everyday activities.

Thank you to The Arc-Dane County for your advocacy and for ensuring that the voices of people with disabilities and their families are heard. I look forward to continuing our work together to build a Wisconsin where everyone can thrive.

Wisconsin requires photo ID for voting. You can get a free state ID for voting at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The Trump administration is moving the Office for Civil Rights and the programs that support students with disabilities and their families out of the Department of Education.
