Today marks the beginning of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Whether you realize it or not, either you or someone you know will be affected by an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime.
Dieting in any of its insidious forms, often disguised as "healthy" or "clean" eating or "lifestyle" choices, is the most important predictor of developing an eating disorder. One large study of 14 and 15-year-olds found those who dieted "moderately" were 5x more likely to develop an eating disorder, and those who practiced extreme restriction were 18x more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who did not diet. (Golden, Schneider, & Wood, 2016).
