Pechmann Memorials
This is an engraving technique called etching. Etching is done with a diamond bit tip that scratches the surface of the granite to create the desired design. As the bit scratches along the stone surface it is removing the polished layer of the stone, leaving behind a crisp whitened area. It’s a great way to capture the likeness of someone from a portrait or a more realistic representation of a landscape while still getting that engraved natural look. Since we can play with the pressure of the needle, we can create depth through the use of light and shadow to create the look of a more realized image, or even a more detailed flat image like this example.
