In Louisiana, as of August 1, 2025, the minimum light transmission for front side windows will be reduced from 40% to 25% VLT (Visible Light Transmission). This means that front windows can be tinted darker than before, but other tint regulations remain unchanged.

Louisiana's window tint laws vary slightly between passenger cars (sedans, coupes, hatchbacks) and larger vehicles (SUVs, trucks, vans, and multi-purpose passenger vehicles).

For all vehicles in Louisiana, non-reflective tint is allowed on the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or the top 5 inches, whichever is less. Window tint cannot be more than 20% reflective. Red, amber, and mirror tints are generally not allowed. Tint manufacturers must certify their film meets Louisiana's requirements.
Rear: Any darkness of tint is allowed.

Important notes:
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) indicates how much light passes through the tint, with higher percentages meaning lighter tint. Reflectivity is the amount of light bounced back by the tint. Medical exemptions are possible for conditions like albinism or lupus, requiring a doctor's affidavit and a decal from the Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

States Determine Tinting Laws

State laws regulate the level of darkness permitted for auto glass tinting. Window tint laws are created as a safety issue for drivers to see other vehicles better when driving and for law enforcement officers as they approach a car.

When determining how much to tint windows, you must check your state’s department of motor vehicles to learn about the regulations, such as the legal light transmission levels. Once you determine the levels allowed, you can choose the appropriate window tint film for your car.
