Our dog’s noses are incredible!
Ever wondered why a dog suddenly stops and stares at absolutely nothing while you’re out on a walk? It turns out they are tuning into an invisible map of information that we simply cannot perceive. Understanding how animals detect scents helps us respect their perspective of the world.
1. Observe wind direction, because scent particles behave like invisible smoke moving through the air, traveling significantly further on a steady breeze.
2. Note the humidity levels, as moisture in the air actually traps and holds scent molecules longer, creating a stronger trail for animals like bears or wolves.
3. Look for physical signs of sniffing, such as a raised nose or rhythmic twitching, which indicate the animal is actively pulling in air to identify chemical signatures from miles away.
Learning to read these subtle cues transforms a simple hike into a fascinating lesson in biology. It is truly humbling to realize how much detail exists right under our noses that we just can't track.
Thanks to all who came out to celebrate the International Dog Parkour Association’s Parkour Play Day 2026! We had such a fun time, and can’t wait to do it again soon!
We will have more free parkour days (minimal instruction) coming up in the future! For those who want to learn how to parkour with your dog, check out our class beginning soon! https://www.busydogtraining.com/in-person-classes/
