Sponsored by the Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative Fund, a national scholarship program created by second-generation Japanese Americans (Nisei) who were interned during World War II. As high school and college students, their incarceration abruptly halted their schooling. With the help of the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council, these students were able to leave the concentration camps and complete their college educations.

In 1980, the Nisei established this scholarship fund to honor those who helped them by “paying it forward."” The scholarships are awarded annually to Southeast Asian high school seniors throughout the U.S. It is an opportunity to support students’ post-secondary aspirations.

Selection criteria include:

Academic Achievement
Extracurricular Activities, Including Work
Financial Need
Further Education and Career Goals
Personal Statement or Creative Audio/Video Piece
High School Transcript
Two Letters of Recommendation
