Today, we recognize dedicated advocate, organizer, and public servant Alderman Camden Hargrove, the first Black out transgender man elected to public office in Wisconsin and second in the nation..

Camden Hargrove has spent more than a decade creating opportunities for LGBTQ+ people, communities of color, and young people through grassroots organizing, public policy, and civic engagement. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Camden began his advocacy at the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center and GSAFE, where he worked to create safer, more affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. He later served in national leadership roles with the National LGBTQ Task Force and the National Black Justice Coalition.

Earlier this year, Camden was elected as the Ward 8 Alderperson for the City of Menomonie, where he continues his lifelong commitment to public service by advocating for policies that build a stronger, more connected community.

Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey has built a career rooted in service, leadership, and a deep commitment to strengthening communities across Wisconsin. As first Black and openly gay Mayor of La Crosse, he has focused on creating a city where every resident has the opportunity to succeed by championing collaboration, economic growth, and inclusive local government.

Before becoming mayor, Shaundel Washington-Spivey served on the La Crosse Common Council. As one of the few Black mayors in Wisconsin, Mayor Washington-Spivey continues to break barriers while demonstrating the power of representative leadership. We are proud to recognize Mayor Shaundel Washington-Spivey for his dedication to public service, and his leadership in creating a more inclusive future for Wisconsin.
