Eight Children Killed In Early Morning Shreveport Shooting Spree

Eight children between the ages of 1 and 14 were killed early Sunday morning, April 19, 2026, in a series of shootings that authorities say stemmed from a domestic situation in Shreveport, Louisiana.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, the violence began around 6 a.m. in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. Officers were called to reports of gunfire along West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue, where the situation quickly unfolded across multiple locations.

Investigators identified three primary scenes, including two homes on West 79th Street and a nearby residence on Harrison Street. Police confirmed that some of the victims were related to the suspect.

Authorities say the suspect, identified by locals as Shamar Elkins, fled the area after the shootings. During his escape, he allegedly stole a vehicle and led officers into Bossier Parish.

The pursuit ended there when police shot and killed him. Officials believe he acted alone.

In total, 10 people were shot. Eight children were killed. Two adult women survived with serious head injuries. Another child was hurt after jumping from a roof while trying to escape but is expected to recover.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith described the scene as one of the most disturbing cases the department has ever encountered. The mayor also responded to the area as investigators began processing evidence.

At this time, a motive has not been confirmed. People who knew the suspect have expressed shock, with some saying they previously viewed him as a caring father.

Authorities are asking anyone with photos, videos, or information to come forward as the investigation continues.
