No. 11 Texas Tech softball outlasted No. 8 UCLA Sunday evening 8-7 in nine innings to avoid elimination and advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s College World Series against No. 2 University of Alabama.

No. 1-seeded Texas Tech softball advanced to the NCAA Lubbock Softball Regional Championship following a record-breaking late-game surge to walk off No. 4-seeded University of Mississippi 10-9 in the eighth frame Saturday at Tracy Sellers Field.

With a single out away from dropping the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tech put together consecutive scoring at-bats before tying the contest with a grand slam. The continued batting momentum allowed the Red Raiders to walk off Ole Miss in the eighth frame to complete the comeback.

Leading up to Tech’s late-game rally, the Red Raiders saw six scoreless innings and trailed by eight runs. According to ESPN, teams this century were 0-640 when trailing by eight or more runs in an NCAA softball tournament game.

An RBI single with two outs from Tech junior utility Kaitlyn Terry was all that was needed to diminish those odds, giving the Red Raiders their first run of the day at 8-1. Her effort kicked off a series of at-bats that allowed the Red Raiders to put together the eight-run frame they needed.
