UPDATE: Elderly Man Remains Outside After Declining Assistance as Winter Weather Sets In

As freezing temperatures continue across Lubbock, concern remains for an elderly man known to the community as Danny, who has been staying outside near the intersection of 13th Street and Slide Road.

Earlier reports indicated that arrangements had been made for Danny to be picked up and taken indoors. However, new information shared by community members confirms that while help was offered and resources were mobilized, Danny ultimately refused to leave the location.

According to a woman who has been closely involved in checking on him, Danny was not picked up because he chose to stay. Despite that decision, she and her family did not walk away. They purchased tarps and worked to create makeshift shelter to block wind and cold. Other community members also stepped in, providing food, blankets, and additional supplies in an effort to keep him as safe as possible under the circumstances.

Photos shared from the scene show tarps secured along the building and bedding arranged beneath an overhang, reflecting the effort to protect him from the elements as temperatures dropped.

Those involved say the situation is especially difficult because Danny continues to refuse formal assistance, even as the weather becomes more dangerous. Still, the community has remained attentive, checking on him and doing what they can while respecting his decision.

As Lubbock faces ongoing winter conditions, this situation highlights both the limits and the heart of community action. Help can be offered, resources can be gathered, and people can show up, but ultimately some choices remain out of others’ hands.

Community members say they are continuing to monitor the situation and are urging anyone with additional resources or outreach experience to stay engaged, especially as overnight temperatures remain at dangerous levels.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
