Wildlife can surprise you in ways that leave you speechless! While visiting the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in south Florida last month, I came across several species of wildlife I hadn’t seen there before. It was a spectacular day, that started off with a cool and foggy morning. You never know what you might see until you get outside and stroll among the trees, and breath in nature!

As the sunsets along the banks of the Missouri River, a flock of Canada Geese lock in their landing on the still waters. I always love seeing the geese in the winter as they migrate south to warmer climates. This particular trip was from several weeks ago after a particularly windy and chilly fall day in the Dakota’s. As the wind died down and the evening turned into night, the Missouri River became alive with the steady honks of the Canada Goose.

While out scouting new locations for wildlife not found at home in west Texas, I came across this Limpkin. He was muddling around in search of his next snack in the freshwater marsh of Normally near the size of a Heron, they feed almost exclusively on Apple Snails. Really cool to see one!

While on a scouting trip in the Davis Mountains this past spring, I came across a flock of Rio Grande turkeys. They paid very little attention to me as I tried capturing their movements. It was late in the afternoon in a grove of Ponderosa Pines and Scrub Oaks, providing plenty of shade during the heat of the day. I can’t wait to revisit the Davis Mountains in cooler weather this fall!
