Did you know there are multiple types of Alzheimer's disease? But, the constant characteristic between all of them is the presence of amyloid plaques. Amyloid plaques are clumps of a protein called beta-amyloid that builds up in the brain. These plaques can disrupt communication between nerve cells and eventually lead to cell death. Scientists believe that the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain may be one of the main causes of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Research is ongoing to understand the role of amyloid plaque in the different types of Alzheimer's. But, some progress has been made on how to prevent or slow the build-up of these plaques.
1. Get enough sleep. Growing evidence suggests that improved sleep can help prevent Alzheimer's and is linked to greater amyloid clearance from the brain.
2. Get plenty of omega-3 fats. Evidence suggests that the DHA found in these healthy fats may help prevent Alzheimer's disease and dementia by reducing beta-amyloid plaques. Food sources include cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, seaweed, and sardines.
3. Exercise. Regular physical activity has been shown to improve brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Exercise can increase blood flow to the brain, which helps to reduce the formation of amyloid plaques. But, the constant characteristic between all of them is the presence of amyloid plaques.
