CAP

For the first time in at least 10 years, the Clothing Assistance Program (CAP) hosted a summer bonus giveaway for families.

The event on Wed., June 17, attracted 42 families who have at least 125 students enrolled in JCPS. Families browsed an assortment of casual items for adults and children in all sizes. Participants also collected new women’s sandals, flats, and heels as well as new Under Armour slides and sandals, all of which were donated in April by Amazon SDF4.

Families also selected new pillows/cushions, travel bags and backpacks, furniture covers, and swimsuits, which were donated in May by the United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF).

Since 1971, CAP has supported public school families with new and gently used clothing and accessories. CAP is a partnership between the 15th District PTA and the JCPS Diversity, Equity, Poverty Division. CAP’s mission is to help all families eliminate barriers and show up prepared for school. CAP offers gently used clothing, new and gently used school uniforms, shoes, and basics. Children in attendance also enjoyed book and toy tables.

Typically, giveaways are during the school year. This week’s event helped families find additional items to enjoy this summer, and CAP was able to purge excess items in preparation for the back-to-school season. CAP also hosted three bonus giveaways on Wednesdays in May.

The next big event that CAP hosts will be the Back-to-School Blitz, which is typically the two weeks leading to the first day of school, which will be Thurs., Aug. 6. The dates for that event have not yet been finalized.

Thank you to the regular crew of CAP’s supervolunteers who made Wednesday go smoothly: Barbara Fischer, Ann Stein, Julie Waterman, Charles Etta Miller, Jane Steffler, and Cathy Johnson Kane. They contribute throughout the school year and summer. Kudos too to a handful of Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) coordinators who volunteered their time and knew many of the families who attended.
