Why a “wandering nerve” dictates your stress response, digestion, immunity, mood, and more — and how science shows you can strengthen it naturally and with technology.
If You Fix This Nerve, You Fix the System
The Most Misunderstood Nerve in the Body
Imagine a communication network running from your brainstem down through your neck, into your chest and abdomen — connecting to your heart, lungs, digestive system, immune system, and even mood regulation centers.
That’s the vagus nerve — cranial nerve X — and it’s one of the most important yet under-appreciated parts of the human nervous system.
Derived from the Latin word vagus, meaning “wandering,” the vagus nerve literally wanders through your body, transmitting information back and forth between your brain and organs, regulating stress responses, digestion, inflammation, and emotional state.
I decided to invest in a vagus nerve stimulator to help with my insomnia and digestion issues. After losing my mom abruptly to a very quick pancreatic cancer diagnosis I developed a panic disorder that eventually lead to several months of unpredictable insomnia. I knew I needed to work on my digestion and anxiety because I felt these two factors were contributing to my sleep disturbances. After much research and speaking with my functional medicine doctor, I landed on getting a vagus nerve stimulator. I wore the stimulator everyday for 30 days for 10 minutes before bed. I didn’t miss a day and after 30 days I was standing in my kitchen and looked at my husband and said “oh wow I can’t remember the last time felt anxious.” He kindly replied “I know babe. You’re doing so much better.”
Not only had the vagus nerve stimulator helped my anxiety it gave me my sleep back. I have since then lent out the device countless friends in hopes of helping them heal their digestion, sleep, and anxiety.
Today, we’re going to break down:
• What the vagus nerve does (in accessible language)
• What vagal tone means
• How to naturally stimulate and heal the nerve
• The science behind vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) devices
• Foods and supplements that help regulate vagal function
• Practical daily practices based on research

In two weeks I’ll be ending my career as a practicing physician assistant and moving on towards having my 4th baby.
My plan is to educate others on how to heal at home through my research and posts on Substack.
I’ll be focusing on 1:1 clients and helping them detox and remineralize their bodies. More than ever we need to detox and I’m going to help!
If you’re here thank you! I’m grateful.
2025 was a great mix of simplicity and unexpected miracles. As I recap the year I can only really come up with a long gratitude list so here it goes
Jan
I’m grateful for the slow cozy mornings watching the kids play in the snow
Feb
I’m grateful for a trip to Disney where we got to see Grady ride his first rollercoaster, Magee dressed as a princess, and Rowan fully immersed the magic of Harry Potter world.
March
A visit to see our best friends. Cold walks to the park. Fire pits & random sunny days that let us ride on scooters in our tshirts.
April
I’m grateful for a trip to the mountains with hikes in the woods and three kids genuinely excited to fly fish. Grady caught rocks and swam with the trout. Mags always down to learn from her daddy and Rowan willing to bet anyone’s fish even if he’s holding a rod in a good hole.
May
I’m grateful the last month of the kids being in school. Hiked in the Forrest by our house. Planting my garden with renewed hope and excitement. Teaching Magee the importance of soil quality. Watching Ben complete yet another murph with impeccable timing.
June
I’m grateful that Rowan turned 12. Magee joined the swim team and learned the back stroke. I won my first 4.5 pickleball tournament. Beautiful date nights and the privilege of nerding out with our kids at a local renaissance festival.
July
I’m grateful for a vacation to my favorite place with my best friends. That Mag only a minor
Reaction to shellfish instead of a life threatening one.
August
I’m grateful that I got pregnant with our 4th babe! That Rowan met dude perfect. That I got to catch a 25 inch brown trout with my son the day before competing in my first PPA tournament to go on and win in my division at 4.5 mixed. Going to the fair and starting out homeschooling adventure.
