How to integrate the drill:

>> Use a target, ideally something that the eyes have to focus on, like a carpenter’s pencil with a letter written on it.

>> Move it in and away keeping the letter at eye level.

>> Do 10 reps before working releases and/or do another 5-10 every couple of turns.

>> For even more activation, do them at the exact angle that they’ll see the bar coming at them.

One powerful change you can make: Instead of strictly linear movement in conditioning, make it circular.

It’s a simplified yet still accurate description of the process. 

I train brains to optimize performance , but I’m not a mental block coach. That said, there are aspects of how I approach performance that can complement the work of someone who specializes in the psychology of blocks.

The real work in overcoming these obstacles can be complex. Instead of hoping it just goes away or pushing through, the best results come when your athlete has support from an experienced guide, like the coaches below:

How does it do both?

Maybe you’ve heard the saying: You can’t shoot a canon from a canoe.

Power from your arms and legs comes in part from a *reflexively* stable trunk.

This drill stimulates the brain areas responsible for reflexive postural adjustments.

To make it harder:
➡️ Use a more challenging stance, like heel to toe (aka tandem stance)
➡️ Change direction of one or both arms in response to a coach or teammate’s command (this is super hard if you’re doing 8s; try it with circles first)

Keep the circles or 8s going for 10 seconds or more.
