This week's item from the 3-D SPACE collection is a vintage Tru-Vue filmstrip based on the newspaper comic strip THE ADVENTURES OF SMILIN' JACK which had a run that lasted from 1933 to 1973. The comic, created and drawn by Zack Mosley, followed the exploits of dashing pilot Smilin' Jack as he flew around in his airplane. In its early years, the strip was meant to be funny, and featured Jack training scared pilots to fly, but in later years it became a serialized action comic with stories of mystery and adventure around the world. The Tru-Vue filmstrip, while most likely produced in the 1940s, features the 1930s version of the characters and a joke storyline.

One thing that makes this particular set unique is that the stereo images of Zack Mosley's original comic strip drawings were made by photographing diorama scenes constructed from cutout paper-doll style models of the characters, sets, and airplane. The filmstrip credits Roy Hufford with building the models and C. L. Crossan with taking the 3-D pictures.

The 15 panel story is shown in its entirety on our Patreon site, presented exclusively for our Patreon Sustaining Members in parallel, cross-view, and red/cyan anaglyph. https://www.patreon.com/posts/155321609
