Nicki Swift recently featured some analysis I provided on why the jump from TV to digital is so much harder than it looks.
We examined HGTV's Clive Pearse as a case study, who left the network and tried to build a following on YouTube. Sadly, it didn't take off.
Here's why this happens so often. A network gives you a built-in audience, promotion, a time slot, and a team making you look good. Digital gives you none of that. You're the content, the channel, the marketing department, and the distribution strategy, all at once.
Once a channel goes stale, it's a hard cycle to break. The algorithm stops surfacing you, viewers assume you've gone dark, and early supporters move on. My advice, If you're a media personality building a digital presence, treat it like a second career, not a side project. Take a read and by the way, thanks to Yahoo for picking it up!
