In partial fulfillment of a Doctor of Musical Arts in Studio Guitar
Many aspects of guitar and jazz pedagogy are flawed from a psychological and neuroscientific standpoint. Ironically, these techniques are better known in modern pedagogy for classical performance, but they do not appear in academic literature for improvisation, jazz, popular music, or guitar pedagogy. This masterclass focuses on three of these practices, blocked practice, slow practice, and perfect practice; proposes more effective alternatives in the context of teaching and learning improvisation; and shares the scientific justifications for the recommendations.
