🤖 Android: check app permissions now
Some Android apps secretly access your camera, microphone, and contacts. Check yours: Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager. Review Camera, Microphone, and Location. Remove access for any app that doesn't need it. A flashlight app should NEVER need your contacts or microphone. If it asks for suspicious permissions — delete it. Protecting your privacy takes 5 minutes. 🍎
🤖 Android: block spam calls with Google Phone app
On Android (Pixel or Samsung with Google Phone app): Open Phone app → More options (⋮) → Settings → Spam and Call Screen → "Filter spam calls" → ON. Google will automatically screen suspected spam calls and warn you. You can also enable "See caller & spam ID" for real-time warnings. Free, built-in, and works great. Share with your Android-using parent! 🍎
🤖 Android tip series: staying safe on Samsung, Pixel & more
Have an Android phone? This week is for you! Today: SET UP GOOGLE PLAY PROTECT. Open the Google Play Store → tap your profile picture → Play Protect → tap "Scan." This built-in tool scans all your apps for malware and harmful software — for free. Make sure it's turned on and run a scan today. Never install apps from outside the Play Store. Part 2 Wednesday! 🍎
🔐 The truth about passwords
Using "password123" or your pet's name? You're not alone — but it puts your accounts at risk. A strong password: is at least 12 characters long, mixes letters + numbers + symbols, is DIFFERENT for every account. Too hard to remember? Use your iPhone's built-in Passwords app (Settings → Passwords) or Android's Google Password Manager. These store all your passwords safely — you only need to remember one. Silver Apples can help you set this up! Call or DM us. 🍎
🔐 What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?
2FA = a second lock on your accounts. Even if a scammer steals your password, they can't get in without a code sent to YOUR phone. Enable it on: ✅ Email (Gmail, Outlook) ✅ Facebook & Instagram ✅ Your bank's app ✅ Medicare.gov. On iPhone: Settings → [Your Name] → Sign-In & Security → Two-Factor Authentication. On Android: Google Account → Security → 2-Step Verification. This one step stops most account takeovers. Silver Apples can walk you through it! 🍎
⚠ Scam spotlight: "This is the IRS"
One of the most common scams targeting seniors: a caller says they're from the IRS, Social Security Administration, or Medicare. They say you owe money — or your benefits will be cut — unless you pay RIGHT NOW with gift cards or wire transfer. REMEMBER: Government agencies never call you demanding immediate payment. They never ask for gift cards. They always send written notices first. If you get this call: HANG UP. Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Share this — it could save someone thousands of dollars.
📱 iPhone tip series: protect yourself in 5 settings
This week we're walking through 5 iPhone settings every senior should know. Today: FACE ID + PASSCODE. Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Turn on "Require Face ID" for purchases. Set a 6-digit passcode (not 1234 or your birthday!). These two features stop anyone who finds your phone from getting into your accounts. Bookmark this post! Part 2 on Wednesday. 🍎
Have you ever received a suspicious email or text message?
This is called Phishing. Phishing is when scammers send emails or texts pretending to be your bank, Medicare, or even your grandchild — trying to steal your personal info. Red flags to watch for: ① An email says "Your account will be closed!" ② There's a link asking you to "verify" your password ③ The sender email looks odd (like "[email protected]"). RULE: Never click links in emails. Go directly to the website by typing the address yourself. Save this — it could protect someone you love. 💙
Quick tip: Set your iPhone to lock automatically after 1 minute. Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → 1 Minute. This simple step protects your device if you leave it somewhere. 🔒 Struggling with your settings? Silver Apples offers friendly 1-on-1 tech help — link in bio!
⚠ Scam alert
Americans 60+ lost over $5 BILLION to scams in 2024. The #1 scam? Tech support fraud — fake calls from "Microsoft" or "Apple" asking you to pay for help. Real tech companies NEVER call you first. Never pay for support with gift cards. Save this post and share it with a parent or grandparent. 📌
