When my best friend Marcella texted me that she'd been dumped and robbed by the guy she thought was "the one," I dropped everything and rushed over. Fast forward 30 years, and it felt like I was living with a stranger. He had turned cold, came home late, always smelled like lilies, and our joint account was mysteriously running dry. Of course, I suspected he was cheating. I tried bringing it up once, but he snapped, so I stayed quiet… for years.

Then, right after our 50th wedding anniversary, Daniel died. While putting away his things, my granddaughter found an old suitcase and called me over in surprise. The suitcase was packed, and the first thing I saw inside was my husband's journal.

I tried to keep my face blank, holding back the sting of it all. I started gathering my things and loading them into my car.
