Excited to be presenting at the 4th International Maritime Human Factors Symposium on: "Lessons Learned from Applying AI to Near-Miss and Accident Data – Insights from SafeMTS and Beyond"
We’ll share what we’ve learned from applying AI and LLMs to thousands of near-miss and accident reports within SafeMTS and across other maritime & aviation datasets —including how AI improves data quality, uncovers weak signals and causal patterns, and supports proactive safety decisions.
We’ll also discuss practical approaches for:
• Building scalable AI-assisted classification workflows
• Enhancing data completeness and consistency
• Strengthening near-miss programs to prevent future accidents
Looking forward to contributing to the Maritime Safety and Human Factors dialogue.

It was a privilege to speak on the SafeMTS panel at the 2025 SOCP Spring Conference yesterday.

I shared how AI is reshaping near-miss data collection and analysis, enabling more proactive & predictive risk management and deeper insight into causal factors. With advances like voice-activated input, narrative and image-based data capture, we now have the ability to collect critical data once, ensure its quality and sufficiency from the start, and make the process seamless. These technologies also allow us to uncover patterns and generate recommendations that were previously inaccessible.

Large language models (LLMs) can instantly process reports, identify gaps, and trace failed defenses—while integrated systems synthesize near-miss data with other sources for richer analysis.

Grateful to the SafeMTS team and the participating shipping companies for driving this important work forward.
