For America’s 250th birthday, Times Opinion asked a real question: what about this country still inspires us? Thomas Friedman’s answer was our unofficial anthem, “America the Beautiful.” And the photo running with his words is us, caught mid-rehearsal, singing it. That feels exactly right for who we are. We have never sung America as a finished story. We sing it as a question we keep answering together, a country still becoming what it promises to be.

The timing is its own kind of grace. This Friday, July 4 at 6pm, we bring “America the Beautiful” to life with Queen Latifah at the America250 semiquincentennial celebration at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
