McCoy Tyner recorded his classic “Sama Layuca” album today in 1974. Also featured on this great album is Gary Bartz, Bobby Hutcherson, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Azar Lawrence, John Stubbefield, Guilherme Franco and Mtume.

Back in the day, extended "residencies" by bands were not uncommon(think Monk at The Five Spot). But rarely these days does a band get an extended opportunity to develop that truly magical synchronicity that only a lot of work together can produce...Azar Lawrence and his quartet(pianist Theo Saunders, bassist Henry Franklin and the late Alphonse Mouzon), thanks to club owner Brad Neal(he said he opened the club so he could hear Azar regularly), the RG Club in Venice offered fortunate audiences this rare experience. Of course, since the Cats would sometimes be out of town and country performing many great Cats appeared in their place!
