ENDLESS DUARDO: 11 years after the
passing of legendary Master Printer Richard S.
Duardo comes a playful reexamination of his most
influential works: collaborations, inspirations and the fine
art prints he pushed to unfathomable levels of beauty & production.
Endless Duardo in a Venice Bungalow is a rare
opportunity to revisit his works in the intimate setting
of El Canto Art Gallery. Nobody printed like Richard,
his work requires our second and third gazing. We hope to
capture his spirit and humor, and to ponder that which drew
the worlds top artists to his studios:
Banksy, Haring, OBEY, Chaz, Almaraz, Mear One and so many others who created critical works at Modern Multiples, OM Labs,
Pop N Fresh, Hecho en Aztlan, Art & Commerce,
CIRCA or Future Perfect studios. A UCLA alumni
raised in East LA he helped build the first print
atelier for Sister Karen and the seminal Self Help Graphics.
Duardo gleefully traversed the sometimes forbidding east/west axis of Los Angeles with playful aplomb and gleeful enthusiasm.
Endless Duardo in Venice and The End of the World of the US
Western Continent is an apt place to plant his swashbuckling in the sand to celebrate his relevance as a pillar and builder of LA’s art, print and graphic scene as a living record and point of indisputable fact.
This is a return for Duardo to the Westside and those themes
uniquely found west of LACMA and La Brea Avenue!
Those themes he loved dearly: Movies, celebrity, fame, beaches,
hero’s, fools and post-modern clowns under the Big Top Locos!
All swirling in the City of Angels and
Endless Duardo!

Modern Multiples Presents
iDied: 10 Years Ago
Richard Saul Duardo (1952-11/11/2014)
A showcase of works produced by the late Richard Duardo in 2014.
Dia de los Mu***os altar by Lisa Duardo
To commemorate a decade since Duardo’s transition to another realm, his surviving sister Lisa Duardo has curated the body of work printed by Duardo in his final year. Works on display will include a handful of artists who worked with Modern Multiples that year, but will primarily showcase iconic, original Hand Painted Multiples (HPMs) by “The West Coast Warhol”, Richard Duardo.
Reappropriated celebrity photos and novel concepts pulled from the zeitgeist informed and influenced his clever, often morbid, potentially racy sense of humor. It just so happens that a decade ago, the AI conversation was on Duardo’s mind. This existential trope of Artificial Intelligence taking over has spawned hollywood creations from 2001: A Space Odyssey to iRobot to Black Mirror. And here we are in 2024, the year of AI! (What would Duardo think now?!) For the first time, Duardo’s “Three Robot Laws” series and “Robosaur” will be shown.
With his roots in both punk rock posters and serigraphic fine art screen printing, Duardo’s work not only exemplifies his prowess in printmaking, but truly exhibits his natural artistry with hand applied watercolor, acrylic paint, and solid marker beneath and atop layers of print. Splashes, strokes, and squiggles of color augment his already pop-art-esque found imagery.
From new collaborations to tried and true classics, new clients to in-house passion projects, 2014 was a productive year for Modern Multiples. Come join us on this day of remembrance.
