The recovery of more than 19,000 hectares (approximately 47,000 acres) by the Yurok Tribe in northern California marks a historic milestone in the Indigenous land restitution movement. This achievement should not be viewed as an event of the past, but as a living act of territorial justice that reverses more than 120 years of systematic dispossession and fragmentation of their ancestral homeland.

The recovered territory lies within the Klamath River basin, the spiritual and economic heart of the Yurok people. After decades of legal and political struggle, the tribe has regained control over vast stretches of forest and waterways that had been transferred to timber companies and settlers in the late nineteenth century. This return enables the Yurok Nation to once again implement its millennia-old systems of ecological stewardship, such as controlled burns and the restoration of salmon habitats.

This act of sovereignty goes beyond legal ownership; it restores the sacred connection between the people and the land. The recovery of these territories is a reminder that the geography of justice is constantly evolving, and that after more than a century of exclusion, the Yurok have resumed their rightful role as guardians of biodiversity within their own homeland.
