A recent study in Science reveals that Yellowstone's 5,000 free-roaming bison are playing a crucial role in restoring the ecosystem. By grazing naturally across the park's valleys and grasslands, these bison, which once migrated over 1,000 miles annually before facing near-extinction, are enriching the soil through their movement, dung, and urine. This process boosts soil life, accelerates nutrient cycling, and produces grass that is up to 150% more nutritious, supporting a more diverse range of wildlife. In Native American cultures, bison are revered as sacred relatives, providers, and symbols of survival. Restoring bison to the land helps heal both ecosystems and Indigenous cultures that were disrupted by their removal. It is clear that when bison roam freely, the land thrives. Allowing bison to roam freely enables nature and culture to heal.
