I was asked yesterday if my hair was “real” by my bf’s uncle, before he proceeded to touch my hair without permission. When I told him how offensive that question was, he then attempts to console me by saying “it’s so beautiful which is why I had to ask”, before touching my hair yet again.

Sometimes being the only Black woman in a room can feel like such a burden. You want to advocate for yourself and your race, however there is a thin line between being perceived as adamant vs an angry Black female, which makes me feel like I have to constantly be cautious with my words.

It is NOT ok to ask any Black woman if their hair is real, nor touch it without permission. We aren’t fu***ng dogs.
