Chapter 1: "I Thought She Was in the Back Seat"
The phone call came just after 4:00 p.m.
"Claire? It's your mother. I'm home."
"Great! Did Lily have fun at the beach?"
There was a long pause.
Then my mother's voice trembled.
"Claire... don't panic."
Every parent knows those words are impossible to hear calmly.
"What happened?"
"I... I think I forgot Lily."
For a second, I couldn't process what she'd said.
"What do you mean you forgot her?"
"I thought she climbed into the back seat after we packed up. I didn't realize she wasn't in the car until I got home."
My heart stopped.
The beach was nearly forty minutes away.
I grabbed my keys and ran out the door while dialing 911 with shaking hands.
The entire drive felt endless.
Every terrifying possibility raced through my mind.
Had someone taken her?
Had she wandered into the water?
Was she scared? Crying? Calling for me?
When I reached the beach, police officers were already searching.
Then I heard a familiar voice.
"Mommy!"
Lily came running toward me, wrapped in a lifeguard's towel.
I dropped to my knees and held her so tightly she laughed.
"I'm okay, Mommy."
The lifeguard explained that Lily had been sitting exactly where my mother left her.
She hadn't wandered.
She hadn't cried.
She kept saying,
"Grandma always comes back."
The words broke my heart.
After thanking everyone, I carried Lily to the car.
As we drove home, I gently asked,
"Sweetheart... what happened?"
She stared quietly out the window.
Then she whispered something that made my hands tighten around the steering wheel.
"Grandma told me to stay there."
"She said she had to leave for a little while."
"She promised she'd come back."
My stomach twisted.
