About the supposed humiliation and failure which is supposed to be archetypally central to leading certain kinds of classically very feminine lives. Today I just had the most fascinating realization.
All of those classic stories and books about "women of reduced circumstance" who were raised to be "proper ladies of position and wealth" but who have ended up, due to failures almost always far outside of their control, with no money or title to speak of. Who are then forced by their reduced position to become social secretaries and governesses and so on.
A story which just keeps coming back in the works of Edith Wharton, Henry James, arguably strongly flirted with in some Jane Austen, etc. etc.
Can any of you think of any of those novels which were written by relatively openly feminist women who had ever, past their teens and early twenties, genuinely lived that kind of life?
