Remembering the life and legacy of East Texas golf legend Jacky Cupit, who passed away at the age of 88.
Born in Longview, Texas, Cupit made a lasting mark on the game of golf. He joined the PGA Tour in 1961 and quickly made history by winning the Canadian Open that same year, earning Rookie of the Year honors. Over his career, he captured four PGA Tour victories and competed among the greatest names in golf.
One of the most memorable moments of his career came at the 1963 U.S. Open Championship, where Cupit came within inches of victory before finishing runner-up in a playoff against Julius Boros, alongside golf icon Arnold Palmer.
Cupit’s peak years on tour came during the 1960s, when he competed against legends like Jack Nicklaus, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by his achievements but also by his humility and love for the game.
Beyond his accomplishments on the course, Cupit remained a respected figure in the golf community for decades and helped inspire generations of golfers across Texas and beyond.
Today we honor the life of a true competitor and gentleman of the game.
Rest in peace, Jacky Cupit. Your legacy on the fairways will never be forgotten.
