Calm Down Skills or Emotional Regulation is a difficult thing for some children (and adults) to master. Practice some of these things when your child is calm to help teach their brains and bodies new ways to regulate!
1. Deep Breathing:
- Imagine you are wind carrying a butterfly through the air. Breath in and out as slowly as you can to ensure your butterfly arrives home safely.
2. Muscle Relaxation:
- Pretend you are squeezing a whole lemon in your left hand. Squeeze it hard! Try to squeeze all the juice out. Feel the tightness in your hand and arm as you squeeze. Now drop the lemon and relax. See how much better your hand and arm feel when they are relaxed. Repeat with other hand.

3. Alone time
- Time alone in a safe area to calm down with stuffed animals/books/ or other favorite things.
4. Snack or drink of water
- Offering a snack or drink of water can help regulate emotions!
