A lot of musicians think playing all the time means theyāre getting better⦠but performance is not the same as practice.
The stage will always expose what the practice room didnāt fix.
If you donāt put in time outside of rehearsal, itāll show.
If you donāt prepare outside the gig, itāll show.
Real confidence doesnāt come from hoping you make it through the set.
It comes from putting in the work before the moment arrives.
Donāt practice on the gig.
Donāt rehearse what you shouldāve already developed.
Prepare so well that when itās time to lead, play, and drive the bus, you do it with strength, confidence, and clarity.
Thatās how solid musicians are built.
Thatās how growth happens.

Teaching Moments š¶
One of the biggest things I teach students is this:
if you canāt count it, you wonāt fully lock in the phrase.
In this moment, Iām showing a student how to hear the phrasing, feel the space correctly, and approach it from a more professional perspective ā not just playing notes, but understanding where the phrase sits and how itās supposed to feel.
Thatās a big part of what I do as a music educator every day.
Behind the scenes, itās not just about teaching students what to play ā itās about teaching them how to think, how to listen, and how to grow.
Because when counting gets clearer, phrasing gets stronger.
And when phrasing gets stronger, the whole musician gets better.
If youāre working on your timing and phrasing, this is your reminder:
slow down, count it, feel it, then lock it in.
Whatās tougher for you ā counting correctly or feeling the phrase naturally? š
I really might have one of the greatest jobs in the world.
As a music educator and nonprofit owner, I get to partner with the GRAMMY Museum to pour back into inner-city youth and the community through music education.
This is more than workshops.
This is access.
This is mentorship.
This is showing young people that their gifts matter and their future is bigger than their current circumstances.
Music changes lives, and Iām grateful to be part of that work every chance I get.
Letās keep giving the next generation something to believe in. š¶
