The ideal access for hemodialysis is an arteriovenous fistula. The arteriovenous fistula is created by a vascular surgeon. In this procedure, the patient’s superficial arm vein is mobilized from its location and then brought next to the closest artery. The artery is then opened, and the vein is sewn to the artery. The arterial flow will rush into the vein, and over a short time, the vein becomes larger, and its wall becomes thicker. Once the walls are thick enough, two large bore needles are introduced into the vein, one pumps the blood into the dialysis machine and the other returns the blood from the machine.
