Patients and families are key to a more holistic approach to improving clinical outcomes. Health care organizations that have formed partnerships with patients and families as part of their quality and safety improvement efforts are reaping the rewards of those partnerships. The report, “Examining the Relationship Between High-performing Person and Family Engagement Hospitals and Quality and Safety Performance,” analyzes how high-performing hospitals and health systems are leveraging and deploying person/patient and family engagement (PFE) in outcomes improvement. After conducting an analysis of quantitative outcomes data and qualitative data collected through participant interviews and organizational site visits, findings demonstrate a correlation between implementation of PFE and improvements in clinical outcomes.

This analysis was conducted by Vizient as part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Improvement and Innovation Network (HIIN) – a national quality improvement program created to reduce harm that occurs as a result of a patient’s interaction with the healthcare delivery system. Patient and family engagement has long been realized as a major change accelerator for the HIIN program.

The major finding and strength of this analysis is the above-average statistical correlation demonstrated between PFE and improvements in patient safety outcomes, specifically in reduced rates of 30-day unplanned readmissions and falls with injury. Few studies have developed scientific evidence that supports the influence of PFE activities on outcomes improvements. The specific PFE activities that were found to most influence outcomes will be presented as well.
