The Bird at Your Feeder Is Hiding 17,000 Seeds in Its Neck
A Mourning Dove waddles quietly under your bird feeder. It doesn't scratch or kick up dirt like the sparrows; it simply walks, meticulously pecking one fallen seed at a time before suddenly vanishing into the brush.
We often think these gentle ground-feeders are just enjoying a leisurely, light snack before flying away.
In reality, Zenaida macroura (a widespread native, Least Concern species) possesses an expandable throat pouch called a crop. Instead of digesting in the open where they are highly vulnerable, they act as avian vacuums. A single dove can securely store over 17,000 tiny seeds in this pouch in one sitting.
Right now in April, doves are actively nursing their early spring broods. They rapidly gather massive amounts of calories, then retreat to a hidden woodland roost to safely digest and produce nutrient-rich "crop milk" for their nestlings. This rapid-foraging strategy minimizes their exposure to native predators like Cooperβs Hawks, while their movement helps disperse native seeds across the ecosystem.
You can support them by providing clean, scattered ground seed and keeping domestic cats indoors.
They don't linger because they have vulnerable chicks waiting in the canopy. Every rapid peck is a calculated risk to bring the harvest safely home.
