Portable fire extinguishers are often times our first line of defense against small fires and chances are you aren't too far from one right now.

Fire extinguishers are devices commonly found indoors and are used to douse fire and prevent its spread. They are small metal canisters that contain compressed gas (usually nitrogen) that, when activated, propel a directed spray of flame-retardant chemicals. Fire extinguishers are only effective if building occupants understand where and why they are used.

Gravity furnaces are heating units and their related equipment that employ gravity to move warm air throughout a building. These antiquated furnaces were installed from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century and are still found in use in some older buildings. Gravity "octopus" furnace and oversized ductwork. Their design is simple: fuel is inserted through a door into the combustion chamber, which heats the surrounding air before it rises into the upper levels of the dwelling through ductwork running throughout the walls and floors of the building. Vents that are strategically attached to the ductwork allow the hot air to escape into the rooms of the home. This design is sometimes referred to as an "octopus furnace."
