People's favorite question to ask a birder is, "What's your favorite bird?" It's impossible to answer, except, I like the one that goes, "The bird I'm looking at right now." Well, ONE of my favorites is the Reddish egret. The first picture is the quintessential Reddish egret, the "dark morph." One of their endearing behaviors is their method of fishing. They spread their wings wide to make a shadow in shallow water. Small fish will move into that shadow. Then, the egret begins to stomp his feet and twirl in a circle, which scientists believe confuses the small fish, at which time the Reddish egret nabs his prey. The activity is a cross between dancing and going crazy. It's DEADLY effective. THEN, there's the "white morph" Reddish egret. MUCH less common, there has been one plying the waters around Jones Park this year. The last one I saw there was September, 2019. They are quite handsome.

You WILL be happy with care there for your pets, but, if you prefer to take them somewhere else, their staff can copy the records and hand them to you (CALL FIRST, 228-868-9479). Veterinarian’s Morning Assistant
We hire only non-smokers.
The Morning Assistant’s position is a direct, hands-on job working with people and animals.
The WEEKDAY hours (morning start time) vary according to the number of boarders in the kennel, but start time can range from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM. The Morning Assistant is usually through and on his/her way home a little after 2 PM weekdays.
WEEKEND rotation is among our usual three full-time employees. On a weekend you are scheduled for kennel duty you will arrive Saturday morning early enough to feed, water, medicate and exercise all of the boarding animals and be finished by 7:30 AM. At that point you will begin preparations for seeing outpatients from 8 to 12 Noon. You will repeat exercising at Noon after closing, then water and medicate boarders as needed. If no emergencies arise you are usually through and ready to leave by 12:30 PM. You will return at approximately 6 PM to feed, water, medicate and exercise again. Sundays you will feed, water, medicate and exercise at 7 AM, Noon and 6PM.
The following weekend someone else will have kennel duty, so you will arrive at 7:40 Saturday morning to assist in seeing outpatients until Noon IF we have enough appointments to require two employees. Otherwise, you would be off for the remainder of the weekend. After helping with noon feeding, watering, medicating and exercising and closing procedures you will be finished until Monday.
The next weekend you will be completely off work from Friday afternoon until Monday morning.
Duties include, but are not limited to assisting the doctor in the examination rooms, working in the kennel (feeding, exercising, medicating and cleaning up after the animals), assisting in surgery (you will receive training in-house to obtain these skills), answering phones, making phone calls, cleaning, various clerical duties including handling money and being responsible for a cash drawer. We have modern computer software that is very easy to use.
Are you particular? We need someone who is detail-oriented and understands the concept that a medical practice has to be operated a certain way, or patients don’t get the care they need and deserve.
Are you a multitasker? If you’re the kind of person who can get a lot done in a day’s time, you may be the kind of person who will fit in at Animal General Hospital and be rewarded with raises for your productivity.
Are you ambitious? If you are willing to use the training materials we provide for you and study at home what you learned at work each day, build on that with information you obtain by using the video and written information we provide, you can move up!
The morning assistant’s position includes assisting the doctor in surgery, and we can train anyone willing to study to learn the necessary skills. You need not bring previous experience or surgery skills with you. It’s a little like being in college: You study at home, then you learn and fine-tune in “class,” i.e., at work.

Because you will be working in a doctor’s office, where schedules can be unpredictable due to patient illnesses and emergencies, schedule flexibility is required: you won’t always be finished at the same time every day.

"COVID" is short for "coronavirus disease." COVID-19 specifies the disease syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2, the mutation of a coronavirus that is causing our current pandemic, first identified in 2019. I submit that the lazy shortening of the terminology will result in future confusion, as both lay and scientific documents will contain the vague term "COVID" in digital perpetuity. Then, in future years, when the next coronavirus causes widespread disease, e.g., COVID-2021, online searches with results of "COVID" will not differentiate between the 2019/2020 episode and subsequent events.
