Had a request for this iconic Van Gogh #💀Cigarette Skeleton pillow cover

If you have have heard of Vanitas, then you know that the term refers to a still-life containing symbols of death. Meant as a reminder of the transience of life, the vanity of ambition, and the ephemeral nature of earthly pleasures. In reminding the viewer of inevitable death, a Vanitas painting serves as a veiled exhortation to repent. I think this is a deliciously macabre yet honorable endeavor to pursue and had to include a few in my little stockings collection. This one features classic Vanitas subjects like the skull surrounded by objects representing the fruits of its ambitions on one side and a lovely scene of a mischievous squirrel knocking over a lovely vase of flowers on the reverse. This is why we can’t have nice things! Squirrels!

I know it’s early but my stockings take about 2 weeks to deliver so bows the to@r to get orders in!
I just added this funny fellow to my portrait wall at home and thought he’d be a fun addition to my stocking family. My thinking being that he’s a fun reference to, “...not a creature was stirring..” from, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. On the reverse side I have paired a still life which felt contemporary to his era; while also reinforcing the idea that all was quiet as the candle is extinguished, the books are closed and the tiny knights stand guard as the house sleeps. I’ve topped it off with a gilded border plucked from a relevant tome of the time. (Ink is not metallic and gold look is a printed effect only)
